What type of solar kit do I need?
There are 3 types of Solar Kit
- Off Grid,
- Grid Tied
- Hybrid (Battery Storage)
More details about each of these kits are listed below
OFF- GRID SOLAR KITS
- Ideal when you do not have access to mains (grid) power
- The energy produced by the solar panels is stored in batteries
- This power can then be used when required
- The perfect system for remote locations with no mains power supply
Pros
- Totally independent of the grid
- Save the cost of having electricity installed
- No power generated by the solar is wasted (unless the batteries are at full capacity and you’re not using any power- the system will shut down)
Cons
- The size of the system is the determines the maximum amount of power available at any one time.
- No backup grid power will be available if the solar panels are not producing or if the batteries are flat.
- You will require a large amount of panels / batteries to run most everyday household items on an off-grid system in the UK.
Ideal for
- Stable blocks, static caravans, boats, shepherds huts,
GRID- TIED SOLAR KITS
- Ideal when you have grid (mains) power but you wish to generate your own electricity and make savings on your energy bill.
- Any excess power produced is ‘dumped’ back down the grid
PROS
- Make huge savings on your monthly energy bill
- Grid tied systems are the cheapest solar kits currently available
- Add devices to your solar system to perform functions such as heating water in your hot water tank or charging an electric vehicle when you are producing excess power (rather than sending it down the grid)
CONS
- No battery storage for excess power produced. Use it or lose it!
- Grid tied inverters cannot be converted for battery storage capabilities (this is a Hybrid system and uses a different inverter)
- There are no longer any payment schemes for excess power sent back down the grid.
Ideal For:
Houses, garages, businesses, pubs and restaurants, industrial units, farm buildings.
HYBRID SOLAR KITS
- Ideal when you have grid (mains) power but you wish to generate your own electricity and make savings on your energy bill.
- Excess energy produced by the solar panels can be stored in batteries This power can then be used when required
- The perfect all round system!
PROS
- Make huge savings on your energy bills
- Any power which has been generated, but not used, can be stored in batteries. Your house can still be powered even when the sun has gone!
- No power generated by the solar is wasted (unless the batteries are at full capacity)
CONS
- The initial outlay cost of the system and the batteries
- The size of the system and capacity of the batteries needs to be correctly calculated to ensure you have enough excess power to charge the batteries.
- When the solar is not producing electricity, it is likely the batteries will not charge to capacity (this is more apparent in winter months)
Ideal for:
- Houses, garages, businesses, pubs and restaurants, industrial units, farm buildings.
What size system do I need?
This is always a difficult question to answer as there are so many factors. What electrical items do you have on? How often do you use them? What is the total power draw at any one point? The easiest way to work out the power you need is to use a smart meter. There are lots of online websites which can help advise you on the size of system you need.
How easy is it to fit Solar panels?
If you are keen at DIY and able to understand electrical basics such a wiring a light socket or plug, you will be able to wire a solar system! Installing the panels on a roof will require a little more skill and we have all brackets and mounts in stock. We also offer bespoke fitting advice to all our systems included in the price.
Do I need planning permission to install solar panels?
Solar panels on a domestic property are classed as a ‘permitted development’ and do not require planning. Commercial systems, listed buildings or those in protected areas may require planning permission, check with your local authority
I want to install batteries with my solar system but I am unsure with how much storage I need?
Batteries are a great way to store the unused solar energy you have produced in the daytime to be used a night. We offer a large range of batteries in stock from lead acid to lithium ion. Not sure how much storage you need? Don’t worry, all battery systems are ‘plug and play’ so if you haven’t got enough, you can always add more at a later stage
